Get It Straight, Keep It Straight

Getting braces or Invisalign is just the first step to obtaining your perfect smile. Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, we will fit you with a retainer to ensure your teeth stay straight.

This retention phase is extremely important for your new-and-improved smile. Wearing fixed retainers or removable retainers allows you to maintain the newly established position of your teeth. Your Tucson orthodontist will monitor your retention with occasional office visits for at least 24 months.

In order for retention to be successful, you must continue to wear a retainer even after you are done with your treatment. Your final orthodontic results depend on your use of retainers. Make sure you follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far and follow your orthodontist’s retention instructions.

Dr. Williams and the staff at Get It Straight Orthodontics in Tucson, AZ can help you figure out how to make retention a part of your daily life. We want to make this process as simple and as easy to follow as possible.

Keep reading for some useful tips on using retainers optimally:

  • Wear your Tucson retainers full time until the doctor instructs otherwise.
  • Take your retainers out when eating…and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants).
  • Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You should use warm water, but avoid hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used to enhance your brushing efforts, but they should not replace daily cleaning.
  • When retainers are not in your mouth, they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them!
  • Initially, you may find it difficult to speak when wearing a retainer. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
  • Retainers are breakable, so it is very important to treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, call us immediately to talk about getting a replacement.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust them yourself.
  • Always bring your retainers to your appointments so our team can make sure they are in the best condition.
  • Retainer replacement is expensive, but with proper care they will last for years!
  • Remove retainers when swimming and put them in their case until you are done in the water.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
